Cuba: An Afghan detainee held without charges at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp for nearly eight years has died after exercising, the US military says.

Awal Gul, 48, reportedly collapsed and died after working out on an exercise machine.

Detainees had brought him to a guard station for emergency help, but authorities were unable to revive him, AFP reported.

While the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has launched an inquiry into his death under their standard operating procedures, the US military has already stated that Gul died of natural causes, most likely a heart attack.

He is the seventh captive to die in the detention center since it opened back in 2002. Another man died of colon cancer, while five others of apparent suicide.

Gul had been held since 2002 over alleged ties to the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The US military claims that Gul was a Taliban recruiter and commander in Jalalabad.

Gul's death occurred after prisoners held a series of protests to mark the ninth anniversary of the prison's existence.

A total of 173 men are still housed at the prison, which US President Barack Obama has vowed to close.
With most of the detainees held indefinitely without trial, human rights groups and foreign governments have condemned the prison.
